Python Programming: Check Yourself

In addition to good coding skills, it's important that programmers develop the soft skills and personal attributes that contribute to a productive work environment. Be sure to check yourself as you interact with others.

Non-Verbal Signs

People will often give you non-verbal cues when you're not communicating effectively. Think about how you can improve your approach if people are:

  • Avoiding you
  • Rolling eyes or looking away from you
  • Crossing arms
  • Walking or backing away from you
  • Changing the topic
  • Not laughing at your jokes
  • Blushing

Ask Yourself These Questions

  • Is there a course-related reason for you conduct?
  • Do you find yourself saying "just joking," "lighten up," or "don't be so serious"?
  • Would you act the same if a teacher was standing next to you?
  • Would you want someone to act the same way toward someone you care about?

Before You Say It

Before you say something, consider these three questions:

  • Is it true?
  • Is it kind?
  • Is it necessary?
